Colin Powell endorsing Obama, kind of a wow moment. I'm not so sure it is about voting for a democrat, I think it is more a rejection of the GOP in general. Of course Mr. Powell can speak for himself in my previous post with the video. I know many skip over videos, and make it a point to skip over video with a political tone, but spend the seven minutes listening to General Powell, very thoughtful commentary in a land packed with morons.
Remember at the RNC where they were holding Senator Lieberman out front, showing that even reasonable democrats support the GOP? I think the Colin Powell endorsement would count as a fairly serious bitch slap in comparison. I mean who really took Senator Lieberman seriously? Where as even the people who are the target of the bitch slap are listening very carefully when the General speaks.
But just like 2002, when Colin Powell says you're doing it wrong, you should take a close look at what you are doing.
A very grim signal for a GOP that continues to shift further right, becoming more divisive, and more and more insane. I can finally rule out a vote for the GOP based on nothing more than an opinion that they are "fuckin' wacko". The fear vote is finally running out of steam. Fear the democrats, fear the terrorists, fear taxes, fear defeat in Iraq, fear the media (except Fox), fear gun control, fear crime, fear Islam, fear gas prices. If you look at it square on, no wonder we are so fucked up, America is scared of it's own shadow after eight years of being told to be afraid of everything, but trust your government. When clearly that thinking is completely backwards.

Expanding on the "wacko", I'm very fearful that if Obama is elected there is a very real threat of assassination. The tone coming from those on the far right is very scary, advocating violence. Not suggestions fantasy violence such as I have in my LJ, delusions of getting the chance to kick dubya in the face, these people are out in public advocating genuine violence. Some really do believe he is a Muslim terrorist, some genuinely believe he supports domestic terrorism. Where most of the distasteful material coming from the far left deals with McCain - Palin sex, and the most common charge being Palin is an idiot and McCain is senile.
These people are scary, and make me question the overall mental health of the United States.
Getting back to the "fear" above, I blame the dubya administration. They have used fear to stay in office and pass legislation for so long now, some people are really scared of doing things different. People have snuggled up to the patriot act and violations of the 4th, 5th 6th, 8th Amendments like a warm blanket. Every time he has addressed the nation it has been about what to fear, not where to go, not how to be brave. Be suspicious, distrust outsiders, monitor the different ones, guilty before proven, dissent is treason, reason is unpatriotic, questions show lack of faith.
In short, the current residents of the executive branch have sown a garden of paranoid lunatic patriots (fueled by no other than ample amounts of cow manure), and now the garden is bearing fruit. Of all the damage done, this might be the worst and longest living of them all. The task might be as difficult as elimination a 100 acre patch of crab grass by hand.
We fail to listen to the wise people of the past. Doomed to plow right into failure, gathering as much speed as possible to ensure spectacular impact..

Most of all the GOP has made fools of some very respectable and honorable Republican public servants. Such as John McCain, being connected to and approving of such tactics as ads against Obama featuring tag lines such as "Too Risky for America" and "Dangerous". With only a modest effort to rein in party members who use Obama's middle name to suggest he is a Islamic terrorist, and continue to beat the dead horse that Obama has genuine ties to William Ayers. It will be disappointing to watch McCain end his political career not as a defeated honorable man, but just another right wing shmuck, who sold his soul to be the next president. Then there is General Powell, another honorable Republican party member, who was put before the UN with nothing more than a sack of lies. Who resigned in shame, unable to control the neocons, and is now back to repay the favor. I'm looking forward to hearing from Powell in the future, I know he will never publicly cut down dubya, he is too honorable of a man to do that. Yet, I feel because of that honor, he will not go to the grave before telling his tale.
