Man vs. Home
Dec. 14th, 2004 01:02 pmAnd then...***zap***, I had no electricity to my computer. Everything else in the house had power, the only exception being the one electrical outlet I was plugged into in the living room. WTF?
The line to the outlet had power, but the load refused to carry the current. Very strange, this requires investigation, to the fuse box Robin! Unscrew fuse one marked "living room", no effect on the outlet. Unscrew fuse 5 labeled "TV room", no effect. Unscrew all fuses that make remote sense willy-nilly, no effect. Unscrew the fuse marked "kitchen", the outlet was isolated of power...after 10 trips up and down the basement steps.
Okay, now the power was isolated, I could inspect the outlet. It was an old outlet; I judged it to be early 60's. But the outlet worked fine, the wiring was good. I replaced the outlet with a new one; while I was in there I might as well make an upgrade to a newer outlet.
Well there went the easy fix, down to the fuse box to begin the trace.
I removed the panel from the fuse box, and found it to be wired exceptionally well. I traced the line out of the fuse box down a conduit to a double-stacked gang box with an outlet for the freezer. Now I had to isolate the freezer outlet as well.
Back to pulling fuses. Freezer isolated.
Open the electrical gang box. **RATS NEST** of wiring, about 4 different circuits were traveling through the box; you gotta love old homes.... I managed it trace the line I was looking for and it was all in good shape. Continued to trace the line to another box, this one included a ceiling light in the basement.
Open it up... and find two loose wires and no wire nut to be found, strange. Reconnect wires with wire nut, replace fuse, check outlet. Nothing, no power, zero, FUCK! I reconnected the wires, just what the hell was wrong?!?!?!?
Closer inspection of the light and box in the basement hinted that there never was an extra wire nut. The two loose wires were part of a junction of four. So I put all four together with the existing wire nut.
Walla! Power was restored. Warp drive was online. Hot dog! Awww, hellya homie! Man vs. house and man kicked some royal butt. Men and Women of the world get ready to put out for big dick-macho-home repair-can do-stud guy, awwwww ya. I was convinced I deserved a never ending stream of beer, sex and praise.
Then I discovered the power to the garage was somehow cut.
Ah shit.
