The link originally took you to the IP address 61.221.243.26. This address belongs to Asia Pacific Network Information Centre in Milton Australia. Hmmm, a fraud spammer in a friendly nation, I am so going to try to ruin his day. I am sure US bank will be very interested in someone attempting to obtain US bank account information.

Yes! It is very important that you get in contact with this person using a IP address in Australia about your U.S. Bank account.

Dear lord, how stupid can people be?

What is so surprising about going to Australia to contact your U.S. Bank rep? NorthWest Airlines, American, and other united states airlines are sending customer support jobs to India, Taiwan, and Laos, why not send banks to Australia?

Hell, even the U.S. Superintendant of Documents (Government Printing Office) is privatizing printing for United States Government statistical information, and sending it overseas to be printed.

Outsourcing. Believe it. Those with the businesses believe in it.

Well, the person could really be anywhere. This is simply the IP address that the message came from. It is up to the owner of the IP address to figure out the rest.

why not send banks to Australia?

Because US Bank would never pay the money to outsource. Trust me on that.

(I'm only slightly disgruntled...)

I got that too! My favorite part was that the date marker on it was January. My guess is that they are trying to make people panic thinking it got lost in the system, and now they need to rush to get this taken care of. Rushed people don't check things out first.

Yah, the e-mail says I have two days to get the information submitted or my account will be suspended.

What account? Heh. Stupid fucker.

Contact the FCC with this information as well. They are trying hard to crack down on this sort of thing. They can't do it without help. (incidentally, I think that most of the banks know about this sort of thing happening, and are working with the FTC to educate people and prosecute those within the US that are perpetrating such schemes). But make much noise.

I dropped US Bank a line. I am sure they will be interested and follow up with the FCC.

I don't see what the problem here is? US Banks is trying to get people to update their bank accounts. I look upon it as a service.

That's funny, considering I know the exact building the USBank.com servers are located in.

And I am willing to bet that building is not located in Milton AU?

My mom got a similar one a year ago or so... It was a little more believable, it was from Paypal, had there logo and a link to thier site and everything. She figured it out because burried amongst everything it basically said that if you didn't do it, you would never be able to use paypal again....

I've been getting emails purporting to be from ebay with alarming regularity.

The scariest one requested that I enter my ebay username, my password and my email password.

A few days later, a woman posted to one of my email lists and said that she'd received a phone call about the car that she was selling on ebay.

She was not selling a car on ebay, and this was just the first evidence that someone had not only hijacked her ebay account (complete with address, phone number, credit card information, etc.) but also her email account! Although she made no mention of "updating" her ebay account via email, I had my suspicions...
